One complete study, nothing held back

What a $26 interview gets you

We invented a US snack brand, wrote it a brief, and put it through the product exactly as a paying client would - 5 interviews in Japanese, 30 minutes each. Everything below is what came out.

$26 per completed session: the $15 platform fee plus the $11 incentive that goes to the participant. 5 sessions is $130, paid once, up front.

What we asked for

The brief, written the way a client writes one

Wildergrove Snacks is a US premium kettle-cooked potato chip brand preparing to enter Japan through convenience stores and supermarkets. It has never sold in Japan. It wants to know how people in Japan actually buy salty snacks in ordinary life - when and where, what makes them pick one bag off the shelf instead of another, and whether a foreign brand nobody has heard of has any way in. It also needs to know what a 100g bag of imported premium chips can realistically be priced at against the domestic brands people already buy.

That paragraph is the whole input. From it the product drafted the Japanese interview guide below, which is what the participants actually answered - nobody wrote a question by hand.

What the participants saw

Survey on Premium Potato Chip Purchases
We will ask about how you buy potato chips and salty snacks at convenience stores and supermarkets. This includes purchase triggers, reasons for choice like taste and packaging, impressions of foreign brands, and thoughts on pricing, all in a 30-minute chat.

The report

Executive summary

The analysis of AI-conducted interviews with Japanese consumers reveals mixed preferences about the introduction of Wildergrove Snacks, a US premium kettle-cooked potato chip brand, to the Japanese market in 2027. Many consumers show an interest in novelty and are occasionally drawn to new or limited-edition products, potentially embracing a foreign snack if it offers a unique experience, flavor, or packaging. However, the overall inclinations lean towards familiarity and reliability with domestic brands dominating the regular purchase decisions primarily due to trust, perceived value, and cost-performance considerations. Some consumers are willing to try foreign brands, but only under conditions where the product offers rarity, special packaging, or is perceived as a personal treat or luxury. Pricing considerations for a 100g bag of premium chips vary, with many participants noting that a price exceeding 500-600 yen could be deemed excessive without added value propositions.

Participants in this research would generally engage with foreign snacks as special treats or under the influence of specific mood-driven decisions, such as feeling rewarding after a long day at work. Japanese consumers are very conscious of price to value ratio, which is significantly impacted by the packaging, perceived quality, and novelty value of the product. Additionally, concerns about the transparency of ingredients and packaging misreputations can act as barriers to entry for imported brands. Therefore, the entry strategy should involve clear communication of these aspects to better align with Japanese consumer expectations of value and quality.

P-0001Female · 20-29 · Kanto region (around Tokyo) · Company employee
What this session found
  • Curiosity for a new experience and a relaxed mood prompted the participant to buy an American snack over a Japanese one while shopping with a friend, as they wanted to try something unique. This was a key factor in their decision.
  • The participant primarily buys snacks on the way home from work at convenience stores; new and limited-time products are the main draws.
  • The participant is willing to pay up to 500 yen for a 100-gram bag of imported premium chips if it promises a unique flavor or quality distinct to its origin.

“My perception of price largely depends on the product's content or special feel.”

P-0002Male · 30-39 · Kinki / Kansai region (west-central Japan) · Company employee
What this session found
  • The participant decided against buying imported premium snacks as they only consider them viable if the price is under 100 yen, which was the main trigger for not valuing them. They find imported snacks to lack additional value compared to domestic options that they are accustomed to.
  • On weekends, the participant usually buys snacks with groceries in bulk from the supermarket, emphasizing the convenience of buying during sales. They don't find similar value in buying from convenience stores due to the higher prices.
  • The participant's flavor choice depends on their mood, but they stick with domestic brands, avoiding unfamiliar products due to fear of dissatisfaction.

“Imported goods don't particularly add value, so price becomes the key factor.”

P-0003Female · 40-49 · Chubu region (central Japan) · Homemaker
What this session found
  • For the participant, the trigger to consider a foreign brand hinges significantly on the clarity of ingredient and production process information in Japanese, presenting a significant barrier due to transparency concerns around imported products.
  • The participant buys salty snacks primarily as part of grocery errands, often choosing on impulse to add personal enjoyment alongside general shopping.
  • Health-conscious factors like low sodium and domestic ingredient sourcing hold higher priority over special edition features when selecting salty snacks.

“A good-looking package can lead me to buy them as gifts or for special occasions.”

P-0004Male · 20-29 · Kanto region (around Tokyo) · Student
What this session found
  • The participant's decision to frequently buy snacks is primarily influenced by spontaneous cravings, particularly at night when gaming or watching videos. This spontaneous urge often triggers immediate purchases, especially from convenient locations like nearby convenience stores.
  • The participant values cost-performance highly due to their student status, often prioritizing lower prices and higher quantities when selecting snacks, though they are occasionally swayed by interesting new or limited-time products.
  • Their interest in new experiences influences their decisions, leading them to frequently try new or trending products, even sometimes opting for overseas snacks despite their higher prices for novelty's sake.

Recommendations

1

Leverage Exclusive and Limited-Edition Offerings

High impact · Medium effort

Introduce limited-edition or exclusive flavors to provoke curiosity and interest among consumers who enjoy novelty and trying new products. This aligns with their reported tendencies to explore new offerings and would serve as a strategic entry point for brand introduction.

2

Transparent Packaging and Quality Assurance

High impact · High effort

Clearly communicate ingredient sources, nutritional information, and quality controls in Japanese to build trust and address transparency concerns. This can be a decisive factor, especially for consumers cautious about imported goods.

3

Pricing Strategy Aligned with Consumer Perceptions

Medium impact · Medium effort

Consider setting pricing points that coincide with the consumer's willingness to pay for foreign snacks, which is around 500-600 yen for 100g. Pricing strategies should ensure consumers feel they are receiving value for their money, possibly supported by promotional campaigns.

What this study cannot tell you

This study's insights are drawn from five AI-conducted text-based interviews, potentially limiting their depth comparison to traditional methods due to lack of contextual interaction and non-verbal cues. Additionally, several sessions did not fully explore alternative brand perceptions or specific promotional impacts, which might impact the comprehensiveness of findings. The limited number of participants constrains the generalizability of results to the broader Japanese consumer base.

Interviewer
Thank you for joining the interview today. We'll chat for about 30 minutes about how you usually buy and choose salty snacks like potato chips. We won't ask for any personally identifiable information, so please feel free to share your usual thoughts and experiences. There are no right or wrong answers; if you can, provide specific experiences like "when, where, and what it was" in 2-3 sentences, that would be very helpful. How often do you usually buy "salty snacks" for yourself like potato chips, rice crackers, etc., and have you bought potato chips in the last two weeks? If you have a recent example, please share it.

Participant
I buy and eat salty snacks about 4-5 times a week. I often eat them at night while gaming or watching videos. Recently, I bought potato chips from a convenience store near the university because there was a new spicy flavor that intrigued me. I always want to try new things.

Interviewer
I see, 4-5 times a week, mostly at night while gaming or watching videos. I'd like to ask more specifically about the timing of your usual snack purchases. When you eat potato chips or other salty snacks while gaming or watching videos, do you usually buy them beforehand, or do you often go out to buy them after you start watching and feel like you want some?

Participant
I often feel like buying them after I start watching. Late at night, I often suddenly crave snacks. However, if I find cheap ones at the drugstore or convenience store on my way back from university, I'll stock up. But that's pretty rare. It's more about following that moment's craving.

Interviewer
You often feel like buying them suddenly at night and follow that craving, but do you usually buy snacks like potato chips from the same store, or does the store vary based on your mood at the time?

Participant
At night, it usually ends up being the same convenience store because it's close and convenient. But if I have time, I might go to a drugstore. Especially when I'm not in a hurry, there's a big difference of about 40 yen for the same snack between convenience stores and drugstores, so I want to buy as cheaply as possible. It depends on my mood and time.

Interviewer
So, you often go to the same convenient store, but when you have time, you go to the drugstore to buy snacks a little cheaper, correct?

Participant
Yes, that's right. If it's late at night, I usually end up going to the nearer store, but if I have time, I walk to the drugstore to get something cheaper. Saving money is important, after all. As a student, I think about that a lot.

Interviewer
I see. You mentioned sometimes stocking up on salty snacks at a drugstore or convenience store on your way back from university. Can you recall the most recent time you stocked up, and tell me when it was, where, and what kind of snacks you bought?

Participant
The last time I stocked up was probably last week, when I stopped by a drugstore on my way back from university. They had a special sale, lowering the price by about 30 yen, so I bought two bags each of the spicy flavor I like and a garlic-flavored one. Usually, I buy two bags of each kind. It's peace of mind to have more on hand.

Interviewer
Could you let me know any specific product names or brands of the spicy and garlic snacks you recently stocked up on that you often buy?

Participant
I don't remember specific product names or brands. I don't think about it that much when I buy. It's more about being drawn to the spicy or garlic flavors; they come in a wide variety, and I end up choosing different ones at different times. I often try what's trending or new.

Interviewer
I see. You often choose new snacks each time, like spicy or garlic ones, but could you share 2-3 recent times when you bought potato chips or other salty snacks, recalling "when, where, and why" you chose those snacks, if possible?

Participant
Recently, on Monday last week, I bought new spicy potato chips at a convenience store on the way back from university because they were trending on social media. Then, on Friday night after work, I bought garlic-flavored snacks at a drugstore because they were on sale for about 30 yen cheaper, so I was swayed by the price. Another time, two weekends ago, I bought a unique cheese-flavored snack at a convenience store while gaming with friends at home, jokingly picking it because it seemed unusual.

Interviewer
I see, you try various snacks based on when something is trending on social media, on sale, or just for fun. Do you often decide beforehand that you'll definitely eat snacks like potato chips, or do you decide to buy them on the spur when you see them in a convenience store or drugstore?

Participant
Honestly, it depends on my mood that day; I don't often decide to definitely eat them. It's more about seeing something that looks tasty when I pop into a convenience store or drugstore and impulsively buying it. Especially if there are new products or discounts, I end up grabbing them.

Interviewer
You often find yourself buying snacks impulsively after seeing something tasty at a convenience store or drugstore. When you stand in front of the snack shelves, what order do you usually check the shelves and finally choose one, like "I first check the new products area"?

Participant
I usually check the new products area first because I get curious about trending or unfamiliar items. Then, I glance at the discount or sale section. If I find anything like the spicy or garlic flavors I like there, I'm inclined to pick it up. Lastly, I briefly look over the familiar products section to see if there's anything different. It's less of a plan and more just choosing based on the mood at the time.

Interviewer
So, you tend to check the new products first, then go to the discounted section, and lastly glance at your regular choices, deciding based on your mood at the moment.

Participant
Yes, that's right. I start with the new items, then check the discounted ones, and finally see if there's anything interesting in the usual section. I pick what I feel like eating the most at that moment.

Interviewer
I see. When you choose a snack from the shelves, what kind of packaging appearance or information makes you more likely to think "I'll choose this one," such as size, prominent lettering, or picture style?

Participant
I tend to notice bold lettering or flashy designs on the packaging first. Especially if "new product" or "limited edition" is written in large letters, I'm intrigued and pick it up. Realistic pictures of flavors make it look tasty, and having a sense of volume is important. I prefer flashy packaging over simple. Strong visual impact makes me more inclined to buy.

Interviewer
When prominent words like "New" or "Limited Edition" catch your eye, or the package feels like it has a lot of volume, how much do you consider the price or content display when choosing potato chips? For example, would you choose the cheaper option between similarly looking items, or lean towards the one with more content?

Participant
I do care a lot about price and content. Ideally, I prefer cheaper and bigger in volume. If I'm torn between similar-looking products, I prioritize the cheaper one with more content. But, if the difference is minimal in cost, I might go for the interesting new or limited ones. Still, cost-performance is a top priority for me. As a student, I have to consider my budget.

Interviewer
I see. Cost-performance is key for you, though you're also drawn to new or limited editions. When you see domestic potato chips and overseas brand snacks together, what is your general impression of overseas snacks, and are there any brands or countries that come to mind?

Participant
When I see overseas snacks, they seem stylish with unique flavors. Particularly, American and Korean snacks with flashy packaging catch my eye often. I'd want to try them once, but since they're often pricey, I rarely buy more than once. It's interesting as a new experience, but I don't often repeat purchases.

Interviewer
Overseas snacks seem stylish and unique, but their higher price tends to make you purchase them only once. Could you tell me about the most memorable overseas snack you've bought, including when, where, and the reason you bought it, if you remember?

Participant
The most memorable overseas snack was one I found some months ago while hanging out with friends. At an imported food store, we found eye-catching Korean snacks. The garlic and cheese flavor combination was unique, so I bought it for about 300 yen. It was slightly pricier than usual snacks but seemed worth it for a fun experience.

Interviewer
You felt that the Korean garlic and cheese flavored snack, bought months ago from an imported food store, was worth it for its novelty, even at a higher price. Do you feel you're more cautious than your friends when purchasing foreign brand snacks, or do you tend to try things based on the mood more often?

Participant
I'm more about trying things based on the mood. Even if a friend hesitates, I'm the type who says, "This seems cool, let's try it!" Especially if it's trending or seen on social media, I jump on it. True, if it's too expensive, I hesitate, but if the price seems reasonable for a new experience, I go for it.

Interviewer
You tend to try foreign brand snacks based on the mood, though you hesitate if they're too pricey.

Participant
Yes, exactly. I'm often tempted by new or trending snacks to try. But if the price is too steep, I hesitate. If it's with friends for fun, I often buy them to try.

Interviewer
I see. I'd like to ask about pricing. What price range and typical size do you usually buy snacks like potato chips?

Participant
I usually buy in the 100 to 150 yen range per bag. The size is usually medium; not too small, not too large, like around 60 to just over 100 grams. I find myself buying two bags because one alone feels insufficient, and that results in satisfaction.

Interviewer
You often buy in the 100 to 150 yen range, feeling one bag is insufficient so you buy two. Do you often consume both bags in one night while gaming or watching videos, or do you save some for another day?

Participant
While gaming or watching videos at night, I often eat both bags in one night, being faithful to my whim. A single bag might feel insufficient, so buying two works out just right. I consider saving some, but there's usually none left by the next day.

Interviewer
I see, you often eat two bags in one night while gaming or watching videos. Now, about "premium" snacks, what features make a snack feel premium to you compared to regular snacks?

Participant
A premium snack often has luxurious or intricate packaging, which adds a special feel. If they're sold at high-end supermarkets or in special sections, they seem more curated. The snack might be thicker or have a unique shape, adding to its special feel. If it's made with select domestic ingredients, it feels premium too. However, they're usually pricey, so I don't often buy them.

Interviewer
Premium snacks have unique packaging or placements, but you rarely buy them due to price. How much would you be willing to pay for, say, a 100g imported premium potato chip snack?

Participant
For imported premium snacks, I know they'll be a bit pricier. For 100 grams, maybe up to 300 yen sounds like I'd buy to try. Anything beyond that makes me reconsider. That's the line where the cost-performance is justifiable for a new experience.

Interviewer
What would make you feel "this is too much" if the price exceeds 300 yen significantly for a 100g imported premium snack?

Participant
If the package is super luxurious, with lots of gold or silver, or it's boxed, it might feel too much. If the bag is big but has little content, I'd feel ripped off. And if the snack's appearance isn't special, I'd feel the price isn't justified. Upselling only luxury without content backing it makes me hesitant.

Interviewer
So when luxurious packaging doesn't match content quality and quantity, it feels like a bad deal.

Participant
Yes, exactly. If the extravagant packaging doesn't reflect what's inside or if the content feels insufficient, I doubt the price. As a student, cost-performance is crucial.

Interviewer
I see. Have you ever bought a snack that felt "not worth it" due to the experience rather than the price, and if so, could you describe it?

Participant
Once, I tried an overseas snack that looked delicious from the package image, but the inside was completely different and tasted bland. There was mostly air in the bag, not snack. I felt so cheated by the price; it was disheartening. I bought it impulsively for its impressive image, but it didn't match expectations.

Interviewer
A foreign snack with a misleading image and mostly air in the bag is a very disappointing experience. Can you explain what aspect of snack packaging disappoints you the most when it feels overpriced?

Participant
The packaging size versus content balance disappoints me most. A big bag with little inside feels like a huge letdown. Snack shape and look matter too. If they're broken or different from the photo, or thin or stale, I feel bad. It's disappointing when the packaging doesn't reflect the product quality.

Interviewer
I see. What circumstances or feelings usually prompt you to think about buying salty snacks like potato chips?

Participant
I usually feel like buying snacks at night to amp up before gaming or watching videos. Also, when I'm tired from university and need a break, I crave them. During exam breaks or mental fatigue, I reach for snacks to refresh. It's about needing relaxation.

Interviewer
I see, so salty snacks support your relaxation or motivation. When eating potato chips during gaming, studying, or watching videos, what other drinks or foods do you often pair them with?

Participant
I often drink soda with potato chips, especially at night while gaming, like cola or energy drinks. The fizz complements the saltiness. During study breaks, if snacks feel insufficient, I eat chocolate or sweets. The sweet-salty balance is addictive.

Interviewer
You enjoy different combinations like soda with chips or sweets with snacks. How do you feel snacks impact your mood or focus while engaging in activities like gaming or studying?

Participant
Eating snacks helps me relax. When gaming or watching, snacking keeps a rhythm and aids focus. Though, I sometimes lose track of time. It soothes and refreshes, making them essential companions.

Interviewer
So, your snack habits are vital for relaxation and motivation, but you're also conscious of value for money. Does that sound correct?

Participant
Yes, exactly. Snacks are crucial for relaxation and motivation, but as a student, I prioritize cost-performance, making sure the price matches the quantity and quality. Finding affordable and plentiful snacks makes me happy, balancing enjoyment with budgeting.

Interviewer
